About

This church has a rich history of meeting people’s needs where they are. This congregation started directly because of World War II. In 1944 our country was at war and there was a need for ships. The Federal government commissioned to build 5200 houses in the Copeland Park section of Hampton, Virginia, to house the large influx of workers needed to build ships at Newport News Shipyard.

Rev. H. T. Stevens saw the need for a local church and set out to meet that need. On the first Sunday of 1943, 142 people met in Thornton’s Store at the corner of Briarfield Road and Aberdeen Road for the first service of the Copeland Park Baptist Church. On Mother’s Day, May 11, 1944, they worshiped for the first time in the new Sanctuary built on land donated by the Peninsula Baptist Association. In 1959 after the Copeland housing project was no longer needed, the city started to tear it down. It was at this time the church was renamed to West Hampton Baptist.

We have had five Pastors in our history and one vision, to reach the lost of Hampton Roads.
